Etymology: Phenacogaster: Greek, phenax, -akos = deceptive + Greek, gaster = stomach (Ref. 45335); tukano: Named after the Tukano people, guardians of Vaupe´s River and in honor of their territory (Maia and Andrello, 2019) that coincides with the distribution of this species, to serve as a symbol of their efforts for the preservation of the Amazon, its people, and its culture.

Μαλακές ραχιαίες ακτίνες (συνολικά) : 8 - 9; Μαλακές εδρικές ακτίνες: 31 - 35; Σπόνδυλοι: 36. This species is distinguished from its congeners, except P. nukak, P. tegatus, P. yari, by the possession of a posteriorly displaced humeral spot located between the fifth or sixth to the eighth or ninth rib counted from pseudotympanum and terminating almost in the vertical that passes through dorsal-fin origin; with a complete lateral line (vs. incomplete lateral line) (Ref. 132565).
