Etymology: Phenacogaster: Greek, phenax, -akos = deceptive + Greek, gaster = stomach (Ref. 45335); tukano: Named after the Tukano people, guardians of Vaupe´s River and in honor of their territory (Maia and Andrello, 2019) that coincides with the distribution of this species, to serve as a symbol of their efforts for the preservation of the Amazon, its people, and its culture.

This species is distinguished from its congeners, except P. nukak, P. tegatus, P. yari, by the possession of a posteriorly displaced humeral spot located between the fifth or sixth to the eighth or ninth rib counted from pseudotympanum and terminating almost in the vertical that passes through dorsal-fin origin; with a complete lateral line (vs. incomplete lateral line) (Ref. 132565).
