Etymology: Paratanakia: Name from Greek 'Para' from word 'parilis' meaning beside, near or by, and the genus name Tanakia, referring to the similarity to species of Tanakia 'himantegós'; noun in apposition; haifengensis: Named after the place of its type locality, Haifeng County, in the eastern region of Guangdong Province, China.

الأشعة الظهرية الناعمة (المجموع) : 12; أشعه شرجية لينه: 14 - 17. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters:D 3, 9; A 3, 11-13 (modally 3, 12); pectoral fin rays 1, 12-13 (modally 13); lateral-line scales 36-37 (modally 36). Colouration: with a distinct longitudinal blue stripe on the posterior half of body, starting from caudal fin base and extending forward to the position below the third spine of dorsal fin in maximum, its anterior tip inserted above the 13th-14th lateral-line scales, and usually not exceeding the anterior margin of dorsal fin; dorsal fin gray with a broad shiny yellow stripe, and with an indistinct, very thin gray margin in males (Ref. 133066).
