This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: absence of an adipose fin or azygous plates at the typical adipose-fin location (vs. reduced adipose fin or azygous plates in N. botucatu, N. paranensis nd a fully-developed adipose fin in all other species); differs from N. botucatu, N. paranensis by having a dark caudal fin with a unique v-shaped hyaline vertical area (vs. dark caudal fin with several irregular hyaline vertical bands) and having lower lip reaching or almost reaching branquial apertures transversal line (vs. far from reaching branquial apertures transversal line) (Ref. 119403).
Cross section: angular.

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Fonte Biblio. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.02138 (0.00778 - 0.05875), b=2.93 (2.70 - 3.16), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Resilienza (Fonte Biblio. 120179):  Alto, tempo minimo di raddoppiamento della popolazione meno di 15 mesi (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100). 🛈
