Etymology: Homatula: Greek, homos, homoios = similar + Greek, atylos, atylotos = without callosities; disparizona: The specific name is from Latin dispar, meaning dissimilar, and zona, meaning band. This is in reference to the color pattern unique in the genus Homatula Used as a compound noun.

Các vây lưng mềm (tổng cộng) : 10 - 11; Tia mềm vây hậu môn: 7 - 8; Động vật có xương sống: 39 - 40. Diagnosed from all species of Homatula by the following combination of characters: body naked with very variable color pattern, anteriorly with bars joined dorsally and posteriorly stripes that may enclose a series of pale ovoid blotches along midlateral line; caudal fin emarginate; 7 1/2-8 1/2 branched dorsal-fin rays; axillary pelvic lobe absent or rudimentary; both lips thin, nearly smooth (lower lip with 1-2 furrows on each side); no median notch on lower jaw (Ref. 93166).
