Etymology: Helicophagus: Greek, helike = spiral + Greek, phagein = to eat (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Jan Theodore van Bloemen Waanders (1820–1889) was a Captain, then Lieutenant-Colonel, of the Artillery, East Sumatra and an amateur naturalist. He was the son of Hendrik Lodewijk van Bloemen Waanders (above). He collected the types. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Occurs in medium to large-sized rivers (Ref. 12975). The stomachs of the specimens examined were more or less filled with mollusks, usually bivalves (Ref. 7432). Enters flooded forest (Ref. 9497). Migrates upstream when water levels begin to rise at the beginning of the flood season and moves downstream as water clears at the end of the flood season. Marketed fresh (Ref. 12693).
