Etymology: Enteromius: Greek, enteron = intestine + Greek, myo, mys = muscle (Ref. 45335); atkinsoni: Named for the late Mr. Maurice Atkinson of the Lake Victoria and Tanzanian Fisheries Service, who had a wide interest in the biology and correct identification of east African fishes, and whose contributions in the realm of fisheries development and training , will long be valued by his colleagues and students alike (Ref. 87017).

Espinas dorsales (total) : 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 11 - 12. Diagnosis: Enteromius atkinsoni is a member of the group of small Enteromius with a thin, flexible last unbranched dorsal ray and two pairs of well developed barbels (Ref. 87017). It differs from all the other species of this group in East Africa in having fewer scales in the midlateral line, and pores restricted to the first 4-9 scales of this series (Ref. 87017).
