Indo-Pacific: East Africa, including Somalia (Ref. 4343). Also reported from the Andaman Islands, India and Indonesia (Ref. 7050). There are a few records from brackish and fresh waters. Recorded from the Mekong delta (Ref. 12693).

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 10. Cheek naked; opercle naked; central pectoral base sometimes scaled; breast and belly anteriorly naked; predorsal region naked or with few scales anterior to first dorsal fin; first dorsal fin with blackish mark on posterior half of fin near base, marking darkest posterior to fifth spine appearing slightly crescentic (Ref. 34009).

Occur in coastal waters, estuaries and tidal zone of rivers. Feed on small fishes, crustaceans and insects (Ref. 12693).
