Etymology: Coelorinchus: Greek, koilos = a hollow + Greek, rhyngchos = jaw (Ref. 45335); hoangi: Named for Tuan Hoang, M. D., for his support of ichtyology at the California Academy of Sciences.
Eponymy: Dr Tuan Hoang, M.D., is a friend and patron of the senior author and was honoured for his “long and enthusiastic support” of ichthyology at the California Academy of Sciences, where Iwamoto is Curator of Ichthyology, Emeritus. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 10. This species is distinguished by the following characters: scute small, broad, blunt terminal snout; underside of head is completely naked; dorsal surface of snout behind leading edge is almost completely scaled; nasal fossa generally partially scaled; distinct saddle bands on body; anterior three pale interspaces between bands are angled slightly posteroventrally from dorsal median line; anal fin overall dusky, coarsely peppered with melanophores and lacking a dark distal stripe; lens-shaped naked fossa of light organ about midway between anal and pelvic fins; 17-23 pyloric caeca (Ref. 75874).
