Etymology: Obliquogobius: Latin, obliquus = having slating direction or position + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); eptactis: Name from New Greek combination of 'epta' and 'aktis' meaning 'seven light rays, referring to the seven characteristic yellow bars on the body.

head is somewhat large, length 32.9-34.4% of SL; lateral surface of nape with scales; postorbital pore G in anterior oculoscapular canal; gill opening is relatively narrow, anteroventral point extending slightly forward to vertical level of the preopercle margin; caudal fin is asymmetrical
dorsoventrally, with rays in upper half much longer than those in lower half, giving obliquely pointed appearance. Colouration: body with seven bright yellow bars, pale whitish in preserved specimens, two lunder the first dorsal-fin base, remainder under second dorsal-fin (from origin) and on caudal peduncle; dorsal fins are pale brown with bright yellow barred pattern; first dorsal
fin without broad black margin; pectoral fin is bright yellow; three bright yellow vertical bars on the upper part of caudal fin; no distinct black spot at the centre of caudal-fin base (Ref. 129320).
