Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Bay of Biscay, the Mediterranean, and from the Strait of Gibraltar to Angola. Also known from Madeira, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands.
Adult biology: Gregarious, forms aggregations over rocky bottoms or seagrass beds (Zostera and seaweeds). Omnivorous but feeds mainly on small invertebrates (Ref. 3688). Important food fish.
Diagnosis: 1 or 2 chromatophores on dorsal profile of body, depending on the length of the larva. . See also LARVAE table.
Climate Zone: subtropical; 44°N - 15°S
