Distribution: | Worldwide distribution from the Arctic to Antarctic. Eastern Pacific: British Columbia (55°N) to at least north central Baja California (28°N) (Ref. 35950). Northwest Pacific: Bering Sea, Kamchatka, Kuril Islands (Ref. 41668). | |||
Adult biology: | Pseudoceanic and mesopelagic, occurring singly or in small schools (Ref. 5759), primarily at 200-1000 (Ref. 58302). Feed mainly on fishes and shrimps (Ref. 5759). Spawn in continental slopes and in oceanic banks from northern through tropical to southern temperate waters. Oviparous, with planktonic larvae (Ref. 35950). | |||
Diagnosis: | In preflexion larvae, head pigment absent, 1 peritoneal pigment patch; in flexion-postflexion larvae, 1-9 peritoneal pigment patches, decreasing in size posteriad; pelvic fin posterior to a vertical through dorsal fin origin in transformation and juvenile specimens. Pigmentation: Preflexion: 1 peritoneal patch. Flexion: 1-4 peritoneal patches, decreasing posteriad. Postflexion: on tip of snout; lower jaw; infraorbital region; cranium; above and below notochord from posterior part of anal fin through caudal peduncle; 4-9 peritoneal patches; by about 25 mm, on base of dorsal fin and bases of first few anal fin rays. Transformation: on dorsum from dorsal fin to caudal fin. Sequence of fin development: caudal, anal, dorsal, pectorals, pelvics, adipose.. See also LARVAE table. | |||
