English name:
Distribution: Circumglobal, broadly distributed, from 50°N to 40°S. Also known from the Mediterranean Sea.
Adult biology: Mesopelagic to bathypelagic. Carnivorous. Probably spawns near the surface in temperate to tropical waters (Ref. 5759). Has been supposed to be one of the 'cable-biters'; reconstructions from big teeth found in submarine cables suggests that it attains at least 100 cm body-length (Ref. 4474).
Diagnosis: Four to five spots of melanophores on the peritoneum. One ventral postanal melanophore and two melanophores at the base of the dorsal fin. Number of fin rays: C 19, D 13. . See also LARVAE table.
