Distribution: | Eastern Atlantic: western Mediterranean south to Mauritania, and from Angola to South Africa. Southwest Atlantic: Nunavut to Argentina. Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). Also, sub-Antarctic region of the Indian Ocean sector south to Heard Island. | |||
Adult biology: | Found in deep oceanic waters to more than 1,000 m depth, may migrate to near-surface waters at night (Ref. 4783). Bathypelagic (Ref. 58426). Feeds on midwater fishes and crustaceans (Ref. 4783). | |||
Diagnosis: | Elliptical eyes. Caudal fin fold in form of spatula. Pectorals very small and pedunculate. Chromatophores on the terminal portion of intestine. Gut not trailing. Pigmentation: Melanophores on dorsal myomere absent in transforming larvae.. See also LARVAE table. | |||
