Distribution: Circumglobal: Atlantic (northern coast of Iberian peninsula to South Africa, also Madeira and western Mediterranean) and Indo-Pacific: southern Mozambique to South Africa; north to Japan, south to Australasia.
Adult biology: Inhabiting the continental shelf on sand or mud bottom (Ref. 4455). Buried with only its head exposed (Ref. 27121). Also found in estuaries (Ref. 9563).
Diagnosis: At 5 mm tendency to form 5 abdominal spots, 1 anal, 1 before caudal apex. At 15 mm 200-208 myomeres incl. 89-94 preanal. 4 teeth in each jaw. 8 abdominal spots, 3 anal spots. Caudal pigment. . See also LARVAE table.
