Distribution: | Northeast Atlantic, from Norway and British Isles south to Morocco, including Canaries, Azores and Madeira, and the Mediterranean and Black Sea. | |||
Adult biology: | Lives generally at shallow depths near the shores on rocky bottom with aquatic vegetation to 60 m depth. Feeds on fish, crustaceans, worms and algae. Sold fresh in markets, also made into fish meal (Ref. 1371). Caught as a by-catch by various fishing gears (Ref. 35388). | |||
Diagnosis: | At 3-5 mm large ventrals with 4 rays pigmented to the base which reach slightly beyond the anus. At 6-10 mm 2 dorsal undivided fins. A lateral caudal spot. . See also LARVAE table. | |||
