Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Portugal to Mauritania including the Mediterranean, and from Angola to South Africa. Western Atlantic: Canada to 20°N and from Brazil to Subtropical Convergence. Also Indian (24°S-40°S) and Pacific (15°S-20°S) Oceans (Ref. 4066).
Adult biology: Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 4066), found between 600-800 m during the day, nyctoepipelagic at surface and down to 300 m (Ref. 4479). Reach sexual maturity at 5.8 cm (Ref. 47377).
Diagnosis: Slender body in flexion stages. Moderately slender body in post flexion larvae. Elongate eyes, slightly narrower than in H. benoiti. Gut straight. Dorsal fin extends posterior to the anus. Pigmentation: A slight pigmentation on the front portion of operculum, on the tip of snout and along the lower jaw. Only one melanophore at the end of the intestine.. See also LARVAE table.
