Distribution: Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. General body shape like those of gonostomatids. Photopores with lumen and a duct. Well developed gillrakers. Supramaxillaries usually two. Adipose fin present in all but Yarella. Dorsal fin 10-16 rays. Anal fin rays 11-22. Branchiostegal rays 11-22; 4-7 on epihyal. Lower jaw barbel absent. Probably a paraphyletic. Spelled as Photichthyidae in Nelson 1994 (Ref. 7463). |
