Family:  Epigonidae (Deepwater cardinalfishes)
Max. size:  35.8 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 150 - 880 m
Distribution:  Southwest Indian Ocean and southeastern Atlantic.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 9-9; Vertebrae: 25-25. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D VII-I-I,10-11; pectoral-fin rays 19-21; total gill rakers 33-36; vertebrae 10 + 15; pyloric caeca 21-24; pored lateral-line scales 47-50 + 3-5; scales below lateral line 11; no opercular spine; no maxillary mustache-like processes; last abdominal vertebra with ribs; oral cavity black; body depth 18.2-19.1 % SL (Ref. 132291).
Biology:  A mesobenthic-pelagic species living mainly above the bottom (Ref. 31632). No length type given but assumed to be SL.
