Max. size:  60 cm FL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 2,800.0 g
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine; depth range 15 - 30 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: British Isles to Senegal including Madeira and the Canary Islands. Also western Mediterranean Sea.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 30-30; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 23-24
Biology:  Caught with bottom and pelagic trawls. Adults are pelagic or epibenthic (Ref. 7097) mostly in shallow waters. They feed mainly on schooling fishes (Ref. 4233). Eggs are pelagic (Ref. 4233).
